ASF Leadership for change

Be a leader for change!

We are a group of engaged IT buyers who want to create positive change in the IT industry. We believe the way to do it is to unite behind a set of sustainability principles that already guide our own organizations, and apply them to the IT that we buy. Quite simply, take leadership, use our buying power, and let sustainability guide our decisions.

It’s more than walking the talk. It’s about creating a march. Join us!

The Manifesto

Through the Atea Sustainability Focus (ASF), the Nordic IT buyers send powerful messages to the global IT industry on how they believe the industry should advance its work on sustainability.

As members of the ASF Advisory Board, we have developed recommendations to the industry. Now we want to take this one step further to, in dialogue with the industry, turn those recommendations into concrete actions – committing even harder to bring about change.

Therefore we will join forces and form a partnership around making sustainability a guiding principle of how we source IT.

By uniting and agreeing on sustainability principles for procurement, we create a market opportunity for the IT industry to accelerate its sustainability transformation.

We will put a higher emphasis on sustainability in decision making. We will align behind existing industry standards. We will set criteria that contribute to achieving the SDG:s, the 1,5-degree goal and a circular economy, including respect for human rights and designing for minimal material use and prolonged lifespan.

Within the partnership we will share best practices on sustainability in procurement and actively seek dialogue with the industry to maintain focus on the most material issues.

How does it work?

ASF Leadership for Change aims to influence the global IT manufacturing industry to more sustainable practices regarding climate, circular economy and human rights. The collaboration among the members involves sustainability criteria only, and members are only expected to share how they address sustainability in procurement of IT and the effect.

Your commitment
By signing up, you commit to start implementing the principles of the manifesto in your procurement of IT equipment.

You also commit to share your procurement practices regarding sustainability with the members and to attend a biannual Learning Academy event to create a best-practice guide. Moreover you are expected to fill out the yearly survey, the ASF dialogue, that every other year will contain a self-assessment on your implementation.

By signing up you also agree to being public about your engagement and to having your organization’s name published on this web site. You will also need to appoint a contact person.

Atea’s role

Atea founded Atea Sustainability Focus which is the underlying initiative that brought together the buyers who now have formed the ASF Leadership for Change. Atea’s role is to coordinate and facilitate member activities. Atea has no influence over the content, and the principles in the manifesto are aimed at the global manufacturing IT industry.

Personal and organizational data connected to ASF Leadership of Change will not be used by Atea in any way.

Learning academy

The Learning academy is very much the heart of ASF Leadership for Change. We believe that we can create positive change through our sustainability criteria, if:
- they are relevant to the industry
- we work in unison

By being transparent and sharing best practices with each other we can avoid making the same mistakes and adopt criteria and practices that actually work. In other words, if one of us invents the wheel, the rest can just start rolling. And better, we can help and inspire others that are at the beginning of their sustainability journey.

To begin with, the Learning Academy will be a physical event every other year. Tied to the learning part of the initiative is also a survey among the Nordic IT buyers that will provide additional insight to the procurement practices and sustainable management of IT.

From our learnings we will create a best practice guide to other buyers and an impact report to the industry.

Q&A

What is ASF Leadership for Change?

ASF Leadership for Change was launched by a group of engaged IT buyers who are also part of the Atea Sustainability Advisory Board (see below). Through our engagement in the Board, we have been developing recommendations to the global IT industry on how to address certain sustainability aspects defined as important by the Nordic IT buyers. To accelerate the sustainable development of the IT industry, we realized that we have to create a market for sustainable actions and decided to do so by transforming our recommendations into concrete procurement criteria, and by putting a greater weight on sustainability performance in decision making.

We understood that in order to succeed we need to share best practices and learn from each other. Therefore a learning academy is at the center of the initiative. We will also have annual dialogues with the global IT industry to communicate our goals, discuss how we best can create impact and to continuously raise our ambitions.

Now, we invite other organizations to join this initiative in order to become a powerful force of change and to raise the overall effectiveness of sustainability criteria.

What do we commit to?

You commit to start implementing the principles of the manifesto and to be public about your commitment. You also commit to share your procurement practices with other members, to participate in the learning-academy activities (see below). Read more here.

How do you monitor compliance?

Right now we don’t. We trust that your commitment to advancing sustainability in the IT industry is real and that you will start implementing the principles of the manifesto in your organization. Further on we might agree on some kind of self-assessment to be able to report impact on an aggregated level.

It is how you act when procuring IT that will make the difference, not your logo on this web site.

Does it cost anything?

No, nothing more than your engagement.

Who is behind the initiative?

ASF Leadership for Change was initiated by members of the ASF Advisory Board, consisting of large IT buyers from both public and private sector. A complete list of the founding organizations and signatories can be found here.

What is Atea’s role?

Atea founded Atea Sustainability Focus which is the underlying initiative that brought together the buyers who now have formed the ASF Leadership for Change. Atea’s role is to coordinate and facilitate member activities. Atea has no influence over the content, and the principles in the manifesto are aimed at the global manufacturing IT industry.

How will the learning academy work?

An integral part of the ASF Leadership for Change is the sharing of procurement practices in order to inspire other buyers and to identify best practices. The ambition is to have one learning-academy event every year. In the future, digital workshops and web-based forums are possible activities depending on how the initiative grows and evolves. Events and learning will be open to members only.

What is Atea Sustainability Focus?

Atea Sustainability Focus brings together Nordic IT buyers, so that we can use our combined voice to increase the focus on sustainability in the global IT industry’s supply chain. The initiative is centered around a survey where buyers communicate the progression they want to see from the industry. Their preferences, along with recommendations to the industry on how to address them are turned into a report that is handed over to the industry’s most influential body on sustainability, the Responsible Business Alliance. The recommendations are developed by an Advisory Board made up of engaged IT buyers, the same group that now has initiated the ASF Leadership for Change.
